THE FISHING INDUSTRY IN MAURITANIA
Fishing is very important tothe Mauritanian economy, the fishing industry accounts for 10% of GDP and between 35 and 50% of Mauritanian exports. Fishing comes from 29% of revenues for the state budget. Fishing generates 45 000 direct and indirect jobs, representing 36% of employment. It is estimated that 31% of jobs are generated by small-scale fishing, and 12% industrial segment.
Mauritanian waters are rich in fish resources due to nutrients provided by the current of the Canaries and the cold water upwelling.
In terms of volume, most of the catches in Mauritanian waters corresponds to medium and small pelagic species, but the octopus is the species that generates more value.
